Paradise unexplored – The North East India


North East India popularly known as the North East (NE), comprises the eight States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim and is geographically situated in the North East corner of India.    The North East shares the international boundaries of India with China, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar. The rich natural beauty, serenity and exotic flora and fauna of the area are invaluable resources for the development of eco-tourism. The region is endowed with diverse tourist attractions and each State has its own distinct features. The attractions are scattered over the entire region and are largely located in remote areas within highly fragile environments. These attractions and the people of the Region constitute rich tourism resources. The facilities for stay, food, shopping and entertainment are improving tremendously.

To highlight the tourism potential of the North East India in India's key source markets, , the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India  is organizing an International Tourism Mart from 18th – 20th January 2013 at Guwahati, Assam.




 The invitees to the conference are :

a)  Tourism Ministers of the ten ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, USA, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland Sweden, Norway, Japan, South Korea , Australia and New Zealand, along with Executive Head of the Tourism Authority of each country (of the level of Secretary, Tourism/DG (Tourism).

b)  Representatives from the Tourism industry from the countries listed above.  The travel industry representatives invited include two leading Tour Operators, two leading Tour Operators promoting India and one Media Personnel  .

c)    Tourism Ministers and Tourism Secretaries of all the North-Eastern States and West Bengal.

d)  Approved (State level and National Level) tour operators of all States of India.

e)  All hoteliers and tour operators of the North-Eastern region.

   f)   Representatives of Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), Hotel Association of India (HAI), Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India (ADTOI) Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) , PATA , WTTC, UNWTO.

Technical Visit to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary [21st January,2013)

The Government of Assam is organizing a one day technical visit on 21st Jan. 2013 to the Pobitora Wild Life Sanctuary near Guwahati for all the hosted International Delegates.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary  is a wildlife reserve  located  about 48 km by road from Guwahati. It is a 1-hour drive through a road passing by the River Brahmaputa, and a small portion of the village of Mayong. It has a dense population of the Great Indian one-horned rhinoceros.

Guwahati - Kaziranga National Park (Drive 220 Km/ 5 hrs): Morning after breakfast drive to famous Kaziranga National park en-route visiting Kamakhya Temple, a Major Hindu Pilgrimage site. On arrival, check in at your Jungle resort located on the outskirts of the National Park. Evening at leisure. Overnight at the Resort in Kaziranga.

Early morning explore the pristine beauty and wilderness of the jungle on the back of an elephant (for one hour) in the Bansbari range of the park. In the afternoon, go for a jeep safari in the most beautiful point of Manas National Park – Mathanguri and you could also have an experience of night safari while returning back to your lodge. Overnight at the lodge in Manas.

Early morning drive to Nampong (150 Km/3 hrs.), the Gateway to the Stillwel road and the host town of Pangsau Pass Winter  Festival.  Attend the festival.  Evening drive back to Jairampur (30 Km/30 Mts.) for overnight stay.

Morning visit to World War-II cemetery and continue to Miao (50 Km/1 hr.) to enter the famous Namdapha National Park inhabited by all the big cats viz; Tiger, Snow Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Leopard Hoolock Gibbon, the state animal of Arunachal Pradesh.

After breakfast, drive to Kohima (74kms/ 2 hrs). On reaching Kohima, head to the State Museum managed by the Art & Culture department. Check in at hotels followed by lunch. Post lunch, explore the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, where one can see the traditional morungs and houses of all the different tribes of Nagaland. Further on, Visit the World War II Museum which displays artifacts of both the Allied forces and the Japanese force: a documentary on the Second World War can be shown.

M.V. MAHABAAHU, Expedition Style River cruise ship of India, cruising on the greatest river of Asia - the Brahmaputra.
Board M.V Mahabaahu at 10 am. Enjoy full day cruising on the Brahmaputra River. The river Brahmaputra (named as the Son of the Creator of the Cosmos, in Hindu mythology) is one of the holiest rivers of the World! Possibly, the only river of the world which is considered holy by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bonpas.
This is the World's only navigable river flowing under the shadows of the Himalayan mountains towering 7400 meters and above. It is a river that spans 3 kms at its narrowest and 40 kms at its widest. In floods, it rises by over 8 meters and spreads another 20 kms.
After early Lunch on board, we enjoy the sightseeing of Sualkuchi and Hajo. Sualkuchi is an ancient craft village-having silk-rearing and weaving communities. We proceed for a visit to Hajo which is famous for its household bell metal industry in all over the world. Tea with snacks and Dinner on-board. Overnight stay on-board

Morning Drive to Dibrugarh (440 kms/10 hrs). Enroute lunch at a local restaurant in Kaziranga.  Dinner and Overnight stay at Mancotta/Chowkidinghee Heritage Chang Bungalow.

After breakfast, take a tea tour around a tea estate known for producing high quality CTC teas. Later, take a boat cruise on the mighty Brahmaputra river in a country boat (Subject to weather conditions). Cruise upto a beach island in the midst of the river. Enroute, there is a possibility of sighting flocks of migratory water birds and the elusive Gangetic River Dolphin. Enjoy the view of the Eastern Himalayas and take a nature walk in the vast expanse of grasslands surrounding the island. Enjoy picnic lunch and the view of the Eastern Himalayas. Option to take a nature walk in the vast expanse of grasslands surrounding the island or go for Kayaking. Return to the mainland. In the evening, enjoy a dance performance by an ethnic dance group on the bungalow lawns. Dinner and overnight at the Mancotta/Chowkidinghee Heritage Chang Bungalow.

The International Tourism Mart, Guwahati is the first major International tourism event in the North Eastern region of India. It will bring together the business fraternity and entrepreneurs behind the tourism products and services of the eight North Eastern States of India and West Bengal. The gathering is designed, planned and scheduled to facilitate meetings involving buyers, sellers, media, Government agencies and others. Through various channels, buyers with strong competitiveness from ASEAN, SAARC countries, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, U.S.A and other regions of India, will   participate in the Mart, including international and domestic Travel Media. This will facilitate a one on one interaction of the buyers and sellers and will enable tourism product suppliers to reach out to international and domestic buyers. The presence of media, and also the familiarization tours planned, post conference, will help create awareness about the rich and varied tourism products of the North Eastern region of India. Besides Seminars, Press Meets, post-Mart FAM Tours and cultural evenings, it will give the participants a first-hand experience of the destination.

Reaching Guwahati

By air

The Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati is 18 km from the city centre and is well connected to New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai, by all major domestic airlines. Air India also operates an international weekly flight between Bangkok and Guwahati.

By rail

Guwahati has a convenient railway network connecting it to the rest of the country.  There are train services from Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin and Trivandrum.

By road

A network of National Highways and other roads connect Guwahati with all the important places of North East and India.

Visa

All foreign nationals, except citizen of Nepal & Bhutan require a valid passport and visa to enter India. The Visa can be obtained from the Indian Missions in the home countries of the delegates. The contact information of the Indian Missions is available online at www.mea.gov.in

4.      Depending on air connectivity and travel time, hotel accommodation, meals, airport transfer at Delhi/ Kolkata for one night during inward journey for the delegate’s country, and also for one night during return journey at the end of FAM tour/ Mart.

Note:  A delegate entering/ exiting India through a long haul flight may be allowed an extra night in Guwahati in lieu of a night in Delhi/ Kolkata.
